Independent Contractors Training:
There are two categories of training. One is Site Specific Hazard Awareness Training. The other is Independent Contractor Training for certain contractors working at any of our sites.
The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), part of the Department of Labor, regulates activities performed at mines, sand pits and quarries. These include training requirements of 30 CFR Part 46 (Surface) and Part 48 (Underground) and Safety and Health Standards contained in 30 CRF Parts 56, 57 and 58.
Under the Mine Act, the definition of "miner" for training purposes includes, "any person...who is engaged in the extraction and production process, or who is regularly exposed to mine hazards, or who is a maintenance or service worker contracted by the operator to work at a mine for frequent or extended periods".
Therefore, independent contractors are specifically regulated by MSHA. River Products Company has an Independent Contractor Compliance Program. If you are to work on any RPC property, you must be on the approved contractor list & completed the Independant Contractor Training. Contact the home Corporate Offices to initiate this approval process.
Newly Employed Miners:
All newly hired employees are required to successfully complete 8 hours of classroom training & OTJ training of from 8 to 24 additional hours in task training. In addition, all field employees are mandated to complete 8 hours annual refresher training in subjects such as first aid, CPR, MSHA training, accident prevention, defensive driving, proper handlinh & storage of explosives & updates to proper personell procedures. They likewise are required to participate in RPC / MSHA's Part 62 Hearing Conservation Program.
RPC is committed to providing a drug & alchohol free workplace.
